The Idea

Anyone can be working towards becoming dementia-friendly; a city, town, village or even an organisation. It's all about understanding, respecting and supporting those living with dementia. The aim is to ensure that people with dementia can still feel confident with contributing and participating in the local community.

Spreading The Word

In May 2016, the first public meeting was held to make locals aware of this initiative.
Businesses, groups, services, clubs and local residents were amongst those who attended.
Various public meetings were held throughout the year to encourage interest in forming a steering group to push the idea forward.

Formation of Abergele Steering Group

March 2017 has seen the official formation of the steering group, needed to drive forward change. The members represent various aspects of the community including public organisations, private businesses and local residents.

Gaining Recognition

The group put in the application for recognition in early May 2017.
Luckily, recognition was granted very quickly and the group managed to achieve the title before Dementia Awareness Week (15th- 21st May 2017).

Official Launch

Although plenty of work has been going on behind the scenes, the group officially launched themselves during Dementia Awareness Week by hosting a community party.
The party was a huge success, bring various aspects of the community together. There was a chance to meet the group, gain an insight into what's going on, as well as enjoying refreshments and live entertainment.
